how my journey began.
Sofia Kent | MSW, LCSW
I am a Chinese-American adoptee who grew up in Grand Junction, CO. My childhood memories consist of playing imaginative games with my sisters and close friends. In my youth, I was an active member in choir, performed in musicals, and focused on my dream of being a ballerina. When I was 18, I decided to move across the country and attend Goucher College in Baltimore, MD where I obtained my BA in Psychology and Women’s Gender and Sexuality Studies. In my junior year, I met my husband while studying abroad in Australia. Between my undergraduate and graduate education, I moved to Australia and worked as a residential counselor for displaced youth. Upon my return to the USA, I attended the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work where I obtained my MSW with a concentration in Mental Health. During my time at DU, I worked as a gymnastics coach, dance teacher, and a Behavior Therapist. I interned as a Youth Success Advocate with the Family and Community Engagement program through Denver Public Schools (DPS) and then as an Adoptive Family Case Worker with Adoption Options. Upon graduating, I began my private practice and served as a school social worker at Montview Elementary in Aurora Public Schools. Now, I focus on my therapeutic work and advocating.
My life-long journey of navigating what it means to be an Asian-American female adoptee fuels my passion for helping others make sense of who they are in this world. A full description of my therapeutic services can be found in the link below:
about my adoption journey
I was adopted when I was nine months old from Xiamen, Fujian Province, China in 1995. I am the middle daughter of three women adopted from China who are all adults now.
Since my adoption, I have been back to China twice with my family. In 2002, my family and I went back to China to adopt my younger sister who is now an adult with special needs. In 2008, I went on a birth parent search that was documented by film producer, Dr. Changfu Chang in a documentary called Sofia’s Journey. During this trip, I went back to my orphanage and had the opportunity to tour the facility and sit down with the orphanage director and staff. Though I have not found my birth parents (yet), I did meet a family that helped take care of me before I was taken to the orphanage and adopted.

fun facts about Sofia.
I enjoy spending time with my husband, friends, cats (Luna and Nova), and taking care of my plants! I continue my passions of singing and dancing through my work as a dance/fitness instructor and serenading my cats on long car rides. When I’m not working, dancing, or spending time with family and friends, I enjoy knitting, reading, doing my nails, and watching Star Trek (TNG and Voyager are the best) and FRIENDS!
