Regulating the nervous system is foundational to healing, coping, and growing. Regardless of what you’re coming to therapy for, learning how to regulate your nervous system is crucial. I incorporate somatic approaches in addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies, Emotion-Focused Therapy skills, and parts-work. As a professional dancer, I have extensive experience and knowledge of how important it is to build body awareness. Therefore, I can offer specific exercises or stretches to help target certain parts of the body that are activated in therapy.
EMDR
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy. EMDR is an evidence-based practice that helps your brain process trauma or distressing thoughts/memories. Sometime our brain gets “stuck” when working through difficult memories or experiences. EMDR helps the brain get “un-stuck” through the usage of bilateral stimulation- the same mechanism that occurs when we experience REM sleep. Though it was initially used to treat people with PTSD, EMDR has since been expanded to treat other diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and disordered eating, and chronic pain.
adoption
It takes a village. I utilize attachment and trauma theory and their respective therapeutic modalities. I will work with the child/youth and parents individually as well as all together. If you’re just starting your adoption journey and in the process of finding an agency, going through your home study, or waiting to be matched, there’s a lot of emotions we can attend to. Adoptive families face unique challenges and I’m here to help you navigate through it.
If you are an adult adoptee seeking support, I am here for you too. Let’s talk about how adoption is impacting you as an adult. Our adoption journey is a lifelong process and we are continuously faced with how we understand ourselves in relation to the world around us.
adoption groups
I offer therapy/processing groups for youth, teen, and adult adoptees at various times throughout the year. The structure of these groups will either be a 6 hour day intensive or 6-week course. If you have a group of at least 5 adoptees that are committed to participating, please reach out and I am happy to run a personalized group! During these groups we explore topics like attachment, adoptive family dynamics, biological family dynamics/exploration, birth culture, grief/loss, relationships, identity, and adoptee culture at age-appropriate levels.
neurodivergence
Are you tired of masking? Are you tired of feeling like you constantly need to conform to social norms that do not resonate with you? Neurodivergent mind work differently- and that’s not a bad thing. I will help recognize and build upon the your strengths and help you fill in the gaps that get in the way of daily functioning. We will work on executive functioning, nervous system regulation, and identity exploration.
couples counseling
Oh boy. LOVE. INTIMACY. SEXUALITY. No matter if you follow monogamous or consensual non-monogamous/polyamorous relationship practices, navigating love is hard. I welcome you and your partner(s) to sit down and have a chat with me about the challenges you’re facing. We’ll initially start with individual conversations with you and then your partner(s) before sessions involve everyone.
marginalized identities
If you are a person of color (POC), LGBTQ+, undocumented, sex worker (SW), etc. YOU ARE SAFE HERE. I see you, I hear you, I feel your pain. There are countless systems that work against you. Let’s work on processing through the complex emotions you’re feeling and regain your sense of safety and belonging. I’m here for you.
ketamine assisted psychotherapy (KAP)
I offer a therapeutic modality called Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical.
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help eligible patients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. I take on the psychotherapy portion of the experience, while Journey Clinical’s medical team supports you on all medical aspects. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine and monitoring outcomes.
Ketamine is a legal, safe and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment and last for up to 2 weeks. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.
Ketamine can be administered in a variety of ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, via nasal spray and using sublingual lozenges. In my work with Journey Clinical we only use the sublingual lozenge form.
educational trainings
If your organization works with people that are adopted or in foster care, Sofia Kent Therapy can provide educational trainings about attachment trauma and best practices. Topics covered are foundations of attachment, adoption and foster care competencies, and considerations for practice. Some entities with which Sofia Kent Therapy has provided educational trainings are Aurora Public Schools, Adoption Options, and Heritage Camps.
dancers/athletes
As previously mentioned, I am a professional dancer and have been dancing since I was two-years old. I have a unique perspective into the mind of a dancer and athlete and can apply this knowledge to our work together. When performing or playing a game, we cannot immediately address the emotions and sensations that come up in real time. We have to develop a different approach that enhances our performance and skill. Let’s talk about it!

I currently contract with A New World CPA as a home study writer. If you’re interested in having me as your home study writer, please reach out!
